The theater opened in 1921 as the flagship cinema of the Balaban and Katz chain. Back then, it was like a real palace — fancy but still affordable, so everyday Chicagoans could escape for a couple of hours and step into a dreamy world. The architects, the Rapp brothers, went with a style that later got called 'French Renaissance,' mixed with some Baroque touches.
